My Therapeutic Approach

My fascination and genuine interest in Neuroscience and Neuroplasticity greatly influence my therapeutic style and work. Although I will often borrow tools from a variety of therapeutic interventions to ensure that I find the best approach for you and your learning style, I have found that the practices of Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Emotion-Focused Therapies are extremely effective in managing a majority of mental health concerns.

Throughout our lives we often face difficult losses, setbacks, obstacles and challenges that leave us feeling devastated, heartbroken, sad, lonely or stuck. Compounding our pain and suffering is the steady stream of stressors, responsibilities, and demands that require our constant attention. All of it wreaks havoc on our nervous systems! This adversity can overwhelm us and lead to chronic feelings of uncertainty about the future, remorse and regret for our past, or present-day paralysis. If left unattended, acute and chronic mental illness can take hold and greatly impact the quality and functioning of our lives.

When faced with these hardships, it is all too common to unconsciously incorporate faulty, irrational or outdated thinking that can distort and negatively impact our ability to cope. We hear that pessimistic inner voice that doubts or belittles us, or tries to convince us that we are not worthy of peace or stability. As we attempt to cope with our struggles and hardships, our emotions can often overwhelm and hijack us. The result is reactive actions and problematic behaviors that only add to our burdens, instead of providing us with the relief that we are desperately seeking.

Support, acute relief, and recovery is available, and many chronic diseases can be prevented, if we invest in our health and wellness and reach out for help when we most need it. Emotional regulation and self-management tools can help us to face these issues with openness, acceptance, and resilience, so that we suffer less and move more gently and compassionately through our sorrows. Cognitive reframing skills can assist us in learning new and productive ways to cope with our problems, find emotional and behavioral balance, and identify and replace old ways of thinking. Finally, learning how to construct and build contemplative and behavioral practices into our daily routines can help us to feel anchored through the difficult times—influencing our futures and awakening us to the intrinsic strength, resilience, and wisdom that lives within us.

Each one of us has the ability to survive and thrive if we invest in ourselves, trust that we are not alone, tap into our resilience, and learn the tools to construct our lives in ways that better supports and protects us. I view therapy as a deeply personal, vulnerable and transformative experience, and our time together will be focused on you and your supportive needs and goals. I am here to advocate, encourage, assist and partner with you through your therapeutic journey. You are not alone!
